History of Team BMC
For more than 25 years, John Hancock Financial leadership has managed the Boston Marathon charity program, making the day synonymous with Boston and Boston's greatness. Over the years the program has allowed Boston area organizations to raise millions in philanthropy. This is an extraordinary accomplishment and one in which we are proud to play a small role.
Since 2002, John Hancock Financial has supported Boston Medical Center by generously providing dozens of Boston Marathon bibs, helping us establish Team BMC—a group of dedicated Boston Marathon runners representing BMC. To date, the team has raised more than $3.8 million to support a variety of initiatives at Boston Medical Center, allowing the hospital to continue its mission of providing exceptional care, without exception.
Team BMC has consistently been one of the top performing charities in the John Hancock Non-Profit Program. Our 2014 marathon team was no exception. Filled with determination to take back the finish line after the tragic events of 2013, a record-breaking 107 dedicated members of Team BMC led by Kevin Spacey, honorary captain and star of the show “House of Cards,” represented Boston Medical Center on April 21, 2014. By the end of the marathon season, Team BMC raised more than $1.1 million and was a leader among all marathon charitable programs. Click here, to read more about our 2014 team's incredible journey.
In 2016, Team BMC’s 91 runners crossed the finish line with another exceptional year of fundraising, raising more than $900,000 for BMC’s Emergency Department. The team was led by honorary co-captains, former BMC patient Jeff Bauman and actor Jake Gyllenhaal. Bauman, who was severely injured in the 2013 Boston Marathon bombings, was rushed to Boston Medical Center where he received world-class care to treat his injuries. He became a symbol of the city’s strength, and his account of that day and his recovery, outlined in his inspiring memoir titled Stronger, has been adapted into a film where Gyllenhaal will portray Bauman.
