In 1996, Mayor Thomas Menino championed a merger of Boston City Hospital, the oldest municipal hospital in the United States, and Boston University Medical Center. The result was Boston Medical Center, a hospital uniquely equipped to best serve all of Boston with a deep commitment to accessible care and the strength of an academic medical center.
