When Mike Platt, MD, became residency program director of otolaryngology at Boston Medical Center in 2016, his mission was to ensure his residents were leading active, healthy lives despite their busy schedules. He created Team Runny Noses, a BMC community fundraiser, inviting residents and employees to compete in local athletic events while raising funds for their department.
Residents often work long hours, which makes maintaining a healthy sleep and exercise schedule difficult. Platt weaves Team Runny Noses into his orientation.
“We have a wellness curriculum; you have to exercise, eat well, and sleep well to stay healthy and succeed in your residency. Residents are often goal-oriented, so it’s helpful to give them a fun goal to work toward outside of their jobs,” shares Platt.
Team Runny Noses is a full otolaryngology team effort. Staff and residents who prefer not to compete will cheer for their colleagues during races. “We encourage employees to volunteer if they don’t want to compete. It’s great for team building,” Platt says.
Since 2016, Team Runny Noses has participated in Boston’s Run to Remember, Boston Marathon, Boston Triathlon, and more, raising up to $10,000 each year for their department. Funds raised have allowed the department to send residents to conferences across the country and upgrade technology in their simulation laboratory.
During the 2024 Boston Triathlon, BMC’s Otolaryngology and Anesthesia departments went head-to-head in some healthy competition, all while raising funds to support their respective programs. Platt encourages other BMC departments to get involved and create their own fundraisers. “We challenge you to the race,” Platt says. “Every residency should have a team—it’s such an easy thing to set up. It’s a low bar, it gets you funds for your program, encourages teamwork, and promotes a healthy lifestyle.”
