This spring, first-graders at Buckingham Browne & Nichols School (BB&N) brought textbook lessons to life at Boston Medical Center—and raised more than $3,800 while doing it.

During a field trip to BMC’s Newmarket Rooftop Farm, students learned about the wide variety of crops grown that supply the hospital’s Preventive Food Pantry and saw the farm’s bee hives, essential for crop health throughout the growing season.
Inspired by their visit, the class spent the year learning about pollinators and the important role they play in food security, while creating a fundraiser benefiting BMC. The class kicked off their fundraising at the BB&N spring book fair, where they sold handcrafted educational books called “All About Pollinator Gardens,” greeting cards with hand-drawn bees and flowers, and painted bee homes. Money raised will benefit BMC’s Nourishing Our Community programs.
BB&N first grade science teacher Lizzie Thome is looking forward to adapting this project for future years. “We are quite proud of the work we did so far and the amount of money we raised for BMC,” said Thome.
