For retired wealth advisor Charlie Walsh, building a legacy that reflects his values is the most important investment of all. It’s why he’s made a planned gift to Boston Medical Center’s Immigrant and Refugee Health Center (IRHC), helping to ensure holistic care for our city’s newest arrivals well into the future.
Early in his career, Walsh spent six years as a banker in the Middle East and traveling across Africa and India. The inequities and poverty he encountered stuck with him. The experience also sparked a passion for giving back and helping others.
Walsh learned about BMC through a client who was a patient. After joining a hospital tour, he eventually met Sarah Kimball, MD, Durbin Family IRHC Endowed Director. He immediately felt a connection.
“When I learned about what BMC was doing, it was music to my ears,” Walsh says. “They aren’t just addressing medical needs — it’s making sure people have food, helping with the legal side of immigration, making sure patients have childcare. They offer all the resources a patient needs to build a life.”
What ultimately moved Walsh to make a planned gift was the idea of safeguarding the IRHC’s work. Now more than ever, the IRHC is essential for a group of patients facing increasing pressures and barriers to health. Walsh’s gift is more than a financial contribution.
“The vision behind my bequest is to sustain this work — it needs to continue,” says Walsh. “I would like to see the values that I hold dearly, especially helping others, carry on into the future. I see that in BMC.”
