Takeda Spotlight

Takeda joined Boston Medical Center in an industry-first collaboration to address medical waste and its environmental impact. The U.S. health system comprises 8.5% of the U.S.’s overall greenhouse gas emissions. The goal of the partnership is to identify solutions that reduce waste that can be scaled and shared with other hospitals. To start, Takeda and BMC are working on a waste audit across select BMC departments to measure emissions and think through waste reduction strategies.

“Boston Medical Center is an ideal partner because it’s a leader in both health equity and environmental stewardship. And what they’ve done creatively is figured out to thread the needle between these two intersecting societal issues.” —Jessica Vieira, PhD, head of value chain sustainability, Takeda Pharmaceuticals
