What Drives Jason and Devin McCourty’s Sickle Cell Disease Advocacy

Jason and Devin McCourtyDid you know that September is National Sickle Cell Awareness Month? This debilitating, life-threatening disease currently affects more than 100,000 Americans with 1 in 13 Black Americans carrying the trait. Despite sickle cell’s prevalence and severity, research funding lags behind other genetic disorders. There is no greater example of a race-based health inequity.

For Devin and Jason McCourty, it’s personal. We recently spoke with Devin, a safety with the New England Patriots, and Jason, who recently retired from football and now broadcasts with the NFL Network, about their family experience and advocacy. The twins are big supporters of BMC. Their fundraising events—including McCourty Bowl—raise essential funds to support sickle cell research and care.
